The Chardon Heritage Committee agreed to consider their discussions and review of "off-square" alternatives to be complete and will no longer continue those discussions. The discussions were held over two meetings, and included considerable discussion of the pros and cons for moving off square. Although the proposed building will consume an additonal 1.4% of the available greenspace, the advantages of staying on the square overwhelmed the advantages of moving to alternative locations. Therefore, the Heritage Committee will be proposing to build the currently planned Heritage House at the location of the existing log cabin. City Council will then decide if and how they prefer to proceed.
Alternative sites included the house east of Pilgrim Christian Church at 206 S. Hambden Street and the Wilbur House lot, at 208 E. Park Street. Although all sites are zoned to support public activity, they are not equal in their support of the project.

The eight-member Heritage Committee has staked out the area where a proposed timber framed structure will be built to replace the square's current log cabin. "We want to visually see the impact the new building will have on the square" said Heritage Committee Chairman John Eltzroth. The stakes were placed in the ground early Tuesday in preparation for the committee's Tuesday night meeting, June 10, 2008.
The committee recently adopted a new exterior design for the proposed Heritage House. The new design is more of a traditional looking timber-framed building that matches many of the century-old buildings along Main Street in Chardon. A few opponents of the proposal claim the 2,600-square-foot building is too big and would interfere with the trees that beautify the square. Measurements have been taken to ensure the proposed building's 33-foot height would not affect nearby tree limbs. The committee is considering lowering the height to about 29 feet. |

On August 14, 2008, Hank Penttila presented the model of the proposed Heritage House to the Chardon Heritage Committee. The model is a small scale replica of the proposed design. It allows everyone the opportunity to see the building before it is actually built, and to experience how someone may use the building. Trees are included in the model to help show how the building will fit within the park and surrounding trees.
The model will be presented to Chardon City Council on August 14th, at the evening Council meeting. We will then relocate the model to the Chardon Public Library, for the community to view and provide feedback.
