Log Cabin

The Log Cabin, which was built in 1963, was originally designed to create a meeting place and to remember the history of the original court house.  In order to keep construction costs down, the building was built with contemporary stud walls and a fake log cabin exterior.  The original building has served the City of Chardon for well over 40 years.  It consists of one large meeting room and a single unisex bathroom.

The log cabin is used by civic and non-profit, Chardon-based community organizations for meetings and public events.  It is used over 160 days per year, by over 25 organzations.  In addition, it has the following strengths:

  • Is highly visible to visitors,
  • Is easily located,
  • Sits in a beautiful location in a park setting,
  • Is heavily used during maple syrup season, and
  • Has a beautiful fireplace and good sound system.  (This will be incorporated into the new structure.)

Current physical problems with the Log Cabin PDF Print E-mail

Largely because the building has lived beyond its intended life, due to diligent maintenance by the City, it has a variety of current problems, including:

  • Water drains into the building during heavy rains.  The ground of Chardon Square slopes from east to west for proper drainage.  Unfortunately, the log cabin was not built to withstand the drainage of heavy rains, and the water runs under the doors into the building.
  • The running water supply is inadequate for the facilities.  Flushing the toilet more than once, will lower the water pressure substantially.
  • The "unisex" restroom provides limited privacy, since the entrance is within the large meeting room.
  • The roof is aging and will require additional repair soon.
  • Many residents say the outside fake log cabin siding looks cheap.  The fake siding was used to limit construction costs.

Functional Difficulties PDF Print E-mail

Although the Log Cabin has served the community very well for over 45 years, it also has a variety of functional difficulties.  These include:

  • The meeting area is too small for some.  The room gets crowded with 45+ people.
  • The meeting area is not flexible, because there is only one meeting room.
  • All equipment (tables, chairs, etc.) are in full view at all times.  The building has no significant storage area to hide equipment.
  • Visitors and new residents find the entrance too "hidden".  When you're in the park (on the square), the entrance is not visible, since it faces the street.
  • The concrete floor can be slippery.  This is especially problematic because of the drainage issues and becomes a hazard when water is running into the building.
  • Creatures may enter.  The doors are not tight enough to keep all creatures from entering the building.
