The conceptual design for a log cabin replacement incorporates both the existing log cabin and the Maple Festival facilities, that are temporarily constructed on the square each year. This includes the stir booth, maple syrup and candy display booth, and evaporator room (sugar house). The combined square footage of these buildings is 1,579 sq. ft.
The conceptual design includes this space, plus more for the additional needs identified by the committee. The total square footage of the conceptual design is 2,635 sq. ft., and includes the following capabilities:
- The same type of stone fireplace, as the existing structure, using some of the same stones.
- A permanent home for maple sugar production and year-round display.
- Glass enclosed, environmentally controlled room for the evaporator.
- A covered porch for sap and fuel storage, plus loading or unloading.
- All equipment can be removed, if desired, when not in use.
- Display areas for winning maple products or other items of maple heritage.
- Two meeting rooms: One large (47 people) and one small (25 people).
- The dividing wall can be opened to combine the rooms for larger meetings.
- Central lobby to access two private handicapped-accessible restrooms, meeting rooms, concession stand, and displays.
- Snack bar / sales counter, open on three sides, with covered porch over the main sidewalk. This would be used during the maple production season for the sales of maple stirs or other maple products.
- A retaining wall on the east side to accommodate signage, landscaping, seating, and to protect against rain runoff.
- Increased storage for equipment, such as chairs, tables, etc. Space for mechanical equipment and building maintenance.
- Timber frame construction with windows looking into the park to view the gazebo and court house.
The Heritage Committee believes the building symbolizes the pride of the Chardon community in its "Town Square" and it recognizes the importance of activities in the park to the quality of community life. It also enhances Chardon's heritage of being the "Center of the Maple Sugar Industry" in Geauga County. |
