After seven months of requirements and design review, the Heritage Committee approved the Conceptual Design. Hank Penttila, from Penttila Architects, presented his latest concept, which was very well received.
Previously, Hank had presented a 4,000+ sq. ft. concept, which the Heritage Committee felt was too overwhelming. Although it met all the required features of the building, we believed it was too large for Chardon Square. His new concept was compressed to 2,633 sq. ft., and still accomplished all the objectives of the committee. |

The conceptual design for a log cabin replacement incorporates both the existing log cabin and the Maple Festival facilities, that are temporarily constructed on the square each year. This includes the stir booth, maple syrup and candy display booth, and evaporator room (sugar house). The combined square footage of these buildings is 1,579 sq. ft.
The conceptual design includes this space, plus more for the additional needs identified by the committee. The total square footage of the conceptual design is 2,635 sq. ft., and includes the following capabilities: |

During the conceptual design phase of the project, the Heritage Committee did not focus on the exterior design or elevation. Those tasks were scheduled for the preliminary design phase, once the city decided to proceed with the project. However, the below image was used to demonstrate, conceptually, what the building could look like.

The below image shows how the approved conceptual design overlays the existing Log Cabin. Expansion is seen in all directions, but mostly to the west (for the larger meeting room). Notice how the building design matches the existing concrete walkways, which helps it to blend into the square.
