The Chardon Heritage website is dedicated to discussions related to the Chardon Heritage project in Chardon, Ohio.  Chardon is the county seat of Geauga County.  The Chardon Heritage Committee is actively reviewing options to replace or remodel the existing log cabin on Chardon Square.  This site is primarily a "forum-based" website, intended to improve public feedback regarding this project.

The square, referred to as the Chardon Courthouse Square District, is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Chardon Square is of traditional Western Reserve style, allowing a central location in the heart of the city for community involvement.

The existing fake log cabin was built to replicate a real log cabin that served as Geauga County's first courthouse on the square in the early 1800s. Logs were not used in the replica in an effort to cut costs when it was built in the 1960s.  It has served the city well as a meeting place, but no longer meets the needs of the Chardon community.

The Committee's current focus is increasing commerce and cultural activity on the square.  We are also building financial support and public awareness.

City Council Approves Heritage House PDF Print E-mail

Chardon City Council approved the Heritage House project, and granted permission to the Chardon Heritage Committee to start their fund raising efforts.  The design (and other aspects) may be refined as additional feedback is gathered, but the primary style, purpose and footprint have been approved.  We will continue to bring feedback and refinements back to City Council for their approval.

Over 25% of the project is currently funded.  One of the highest priorities for the Chardon Heritage Committee will be to continue their pursuit for foundation grants.  Other marketing efforts will also be launched in the near future.

We will continue to seek community feedback on the project.  Please continue to provide your input.

The Chardon Heritage Committee held a public forum, on November 7th, to review a new beginning in cultural activity on historic Chardon Square.  The focus was increased cultural activity on the square and the related impact.  The forum was held at the Geauga Theater.  We reviewed photoramas of both the Heritage House and the Performing Arts Center and participated in a discussion of the cultural impact of the future facilities.  Photos of the Heritage House were superimposed onto photos of the Chardon Square park, so that everyone could visualize how the facility will look in the park.

The Performing Arts Center will be an educational facility, used to teach various skills of the arts.  The Geauga Lyric Theater Guild expects to use the Heritage House as a "small performance venue", providing the community with:

We are very excited and proud to be collaborating with Geauga Lyric Theater Guild in their work to enhance Geauga County through an expansion of services for the fine arts. We jointly agree that the Heritage House provides a small performance venue for Geauga Lyric Theater Guild, which would enhance their offering.  We also look forward to planning our futures together.

Do you like the size?

In order to provide additional functionality, the proposed Heritage House is 1,645 sq. ft. larger than the current log cabin. (2,590 sq. ft. versus 945 sq. ft.) It will consume an additional 1.4% of the available greenspace. Is this size acceptable?

What would you remove?
